 HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS

KITTEN CARE SUGGESTIONS

*Have FelV test done at four months. No FelV shots. All of my cats have been tested and are FelV negative.

*Your kitten should be spayed or neutered between seven and nine months of age.

*Wipe eyes often or when needed. Use warm water and a soft paper towel or tissue.

*Comb twice a week or more often using a light-weight metal comb and/or a long-tooth grooming rake. Try to make grooming a happy experience.

*Check for fleas often as they can become a major health problem if left untreated. When you run your fingers through your kitten’s fur, the skin should feel smooth with no lumps, bumps, or lesions.

*Check ears often. They should be clean and free of any wax build up or black debris.

*Litter pan should be scooped often. Some cats will not use a dirty pan. Sometimes Persian cats can be picky about what kind of litter you use. Unscented litter is sometimes preferred. Location and size of litter pan is also important. You should have at least one litter pan per cat in your household.

*Your kitten will enjoy catnip. I use Cosmic Catnip from Petsmart.

*A favorite toy is the Turbo Scratcher that costs about $10 at Petsmart.

*Scratching posts are a necessity. Train your kitten to use a scratching post by sprinkling catnip on it. Please try to avoid declawing your kitten by training her to use scratching posts, kitty condos, and the Turbo Scratcher. Declawing is a form of amputation.

*Keep fresh water and dry food available at all times. Growing kittens should be allowed to eat all they want. Your kitten should be fed kitten food for the first year of her life.

*Your kitten has been fed kitten Science Diet dry food, canned Science Diet mixed with Just Born powdered formula, canned kitten Science Diet Savory Cuts, and A/D Hill’s Prescription Diet (available through your vet).

If you decide to change your kitten’s diet, please do so gradually. Abrupt changes in diet can cause stomach upset and diarrhea.

*A good supplement for your kitten is Nutra Cal which can be purchased from a pet store or from one of the following animal supply companies.

*I use these animal health catalogs for supplies and products:

*Your kitten can be trained to wear a leash and accompany you to Petsmart or to a nursing home.
